GTA 6 took one Rockstar developer about 80 hours to finish
Rockstar hosted the New York Times, which reported on August 27, 2026 how long one developer's playthrough ran: about 80 hours. Two sites read that same sentence and came away with opposite numbers.
GTA6 LIFE

Rob Nelson, head of development and co-studio head at Rockstar North, played his own save of Grand Theft Auto VI to the end in February 2026, and it took him about 80 hours. The number comes from the New York Times, published on August 27, 2026 after a play session Nelson ran himself inside the studio, and picked up the same day by GamesRadar+ and Insider Gaming. Rockstar has never published an official length for the GTA 6 story.
Those 80 hours are not the main missions alone. The New York Times describes a run through the story plus “some optional goals with narrative ramifications”. That phrasing belongs to the paper, not to the studio. It produced two opposite readings inside a day.
Josh Coulson ran the headline “GTA 6 Main Story Will Take Around 80 Hours To Complete” at TheGamer on August 28, called Nelson’s session “almost entirely dedicated to the game’s main story”, and worked from there to more than 100 hours for an ordinary player. French site Clubic read the same sentence the other way on the same day: 80 hours does not necessarily match the time needed to beat the game, and anyone who sticks to the campaign will reach the credits well before that. Neither writer holds information the other lacks. Both are reading one sentence.
The gap shows in the yardstick each one picked. TheGamer set the 80 hours against the 32 hours HowLongToBeat lists for the GTA V main story, a ratio of 2.5. Clubic set it against the 51.5 hours in the main-story-plus-extras column of the same aggregator, a ratio of 1.55. One site, two columns, two conclusions.
| Game | What is measured | Length |
|---|---|---|
| GTA 6 | Rob Nelson’s full playthrough, story and optional goals | about 80 h |
| GTA V | main story | 32 h |
| GTA V | main story plus some side content | 51.5 h |
| GTA V | completionist run | just under 90 h |
| GTA IV | main story | 27 h |
| Red Dead Redemption 2 | main story | about 50 h |
The first row is not the same kind of figure as the other five: one developer’s save, not an average across thousands of players. Our guide to how long GTA 6 takes sorts the categories game by game.
What fills those hours, Rockstar has not detailed. No mission count and no chapter count have been announced, though Rockstar’s own Ultimate Edition page from June 24, 2026 places bonuses “behind each chapter”, which settles that chapters exist. IGN reported on August 27 that the plot sometimes asks you to raise a sum of money before the main missions resume, and that the story was written to reward time spent in the world rather than mission after mission. The romance runs on the same principle, outside missions, as our guide to the Jason and Lucia bond sets out.
Rockstar has been here before. Ahead of Red Dead Redemption 2, Dan Houser gave a figure of 65 hours and a 2,000-page script, where HowLongToBeat now lists around 50 hours for that main story. No script length has been given for GTA 6, and no measured map size either, the three-times-Red-Dead-2 claim being one we traced back to its source. Nelson put the scale to IGN this way:
“The game is so big, I don’t know that there’s anybody on the team that knows all of it.”
