The 80 hours quoted for Grand Theft Auto VI since August 27, 2026 come from one developer's playthrough, optional goals included. Every figure compared here comes with what it actually measures.

: Adds Rob Nelson's words from IGN's full interview transcript: money gates some missions, and the story pays off for players who get lost in the world.

About 80 hours: that is how long Rob Nelson, co-studio head at Rockstar North, took to finish his own GTA 6 playthrough in February 2026, covering the main story plus optional goals with narrative ramifications, The New York Times reported on August 27, 2026. Rockstar Games has published no official story length, and the run belongs to a developer who knows where everything is.

One playthrough of Grand Theft Auto VI took about 80 hours: Rob Nelson, head of development and co-studio head at Rockstar North, finished his run in February 2026. Rockstar Games has published no official story length. The New York Times, hosted at the studio, reported on August 27, 2026 that the run covered the main story plus “some optional goals with narrative ramifications”, played by a developer who knows where every objective sits.

What each figure measures

HowLongToBeat sorts player times into buckets that do not compare.

Game What is measured Time
GTA 6 Rob Nelson’s run: main story plus optional goals about 80 hours
GTA V main story only 32 hours
GTA V main story plus some side content 51.5 hours
GTA V completionist run a little under 90 hours
GTA IV main story only 27 hours
GTA III, Vice City and San Andreas combined main stories only 64 hours
Red Dead Redemption 2 main story only about 50 hours
Red Dead Redemption 2 main story plus side activities 80+ hours
Red Dead Redemption 2 completionist run up to 182 hours
Red Dead Redemption 2 main story, the studio’s figure before release 60 hours

Nelson’s 80 hours sit on Red Dead Redemption 2’s side-activities line, “closer to 80+ hours” for Dexerto on December 22, 2023.

Before release, Dan Houser told Vulture that Red Dead Redemption 2’s main story ran 60 hours, as GamesRadar+ reported on October 15, 2018, down from 65: “roughly five hours of content was cut relatively recently.” Players then logged about 50.

TheGamer, on August 28, 2026, states that Nelson’s run was “almost entirely dedicated to the game’s main story”, sets the 80 hours against GTA V’s 32 and expects an ordinary playthrough to pass 100 hours: a factor of 2.5. Clubic read the Times quote the other way that day: the 80 hours need not match the time to finish the game. Against GTA V’s 51.5 hours with side content, the factor drops to 1.55.

Where the hours go

Nelson told IGN on August 27, 2026 that the Extended Look “showcases three pretty action-heavy missions intercut with loads of other things you can do, but in just one little sequence we show a couple of robberies, which represents a huge amount of what you can and need to be doing in this game in between story missions.” Some of that is required: in the full transcript IGN published on October 7, 2026, Nelson says “there will be parts of the game where you need to make money to advance the mission flow”, by boosting and selling cars or sticking places up.

Keeping Jason and Lucia close also takes time in the open world, outside the missions. Nelson cites Red Dead Redemption 2, “If you take a bit of time and explore you will be rewarded, a lot”, and the October 7 transcript goes further: “You get the most out of the narrative if you put time into the game and just get lost in the world, not necessarily by chasing from mission to mission to mission to finish the story as fast as possible.” Nelson put the map on August 27, 2026 at three times the size of Red Dead Redemption 2, Aaron Garbut at twice GTA V’s in Game Informer on September 29, 2026, and the story stays off part of it, Rupert Humphries, Rockstar’s senior vice president of narrative, told that issue: “We don’t have time to take you everywhere, but we want to be able to explore and get a feel for most of the places, cultures, and vibes.”

Two protagonists share those hours, a number set with player time in mind, Nelson told IGN on August 27, 2026: “As the narrative unfolds, we’re quite conscious to try and make sure that players have enough time with each character. After doing GTA 5, we talked about different ideas of: do we do more characters? How do we follow up three characters? Is it four characters now? But we worried about diluting the amount of player time with each and, therefore, player connection with those characters. So we decided to step in this direction of two characters in a relationship.”

One run is not the whole clock

IGN, at point 64 of its August 27, 2026 list, writes that the story carries choices small and large, and that the narrative was built to hold across several playthroughs. A playthrough time measures one route through the story, and Rockstar has never shipped a New Game Plus. Vice listed sixteen off-mission activities after the August 2026 previews, scuba diving and backyard wrestling among them, and Game Informer’s September 29 issue counts over 170 animal species. Phil Hooker, Rockstar’s head of development, told Bloomberg on October 14, 2026 of a test session headed for a story mission that became a fight, a store robbery and a police chase. Two hours in, Insider Gaming writes, he “still hadn’t even come close to completing the story mission.”

Some missions branch when the player is caught or misses the objective, instead of restarting, ComicBook reported on August 28, 2026, so time spent replaying failures leaves the count.

What the Ultimate Edition page gives away

Rockstar’s store page for the Ultimate Edition, published June 24, 2026, spreads its bonuses across the whole story, “with new items uncovered behind each chapter”. Nelson told TroisCouleurs on August 27, 2026 that the game is “set over chapters, which also help us figure out how the game is going to move”, carried by “tentpole missions” that move the pair from one part of the game to another. How many chapters and missions there are has not been announced.
