English-language gaming sites have spent the past week repeating that GTA 6's launch day will cost the US economy more than $1 billion. The figure traces back to one outlet's back-of-the-envelope arithmetic.

: Added BambooHR's measure of time-off requests for November 19: 9% to 17% above a usual third Thursday of November.

The claim that GTA 6's November 19, 2026 launch day will cost the US economy more than $1 billion in lost productivity is credited to José García Montalvo, professor of economics at Universitat Pompeu Fabra, and was relayed by Spanish site El Output. MercoPress reported on August 27, 2026 that it comes from no published study and that no consultancy has released its methodology. Its two public inputs work out to about $404 million. BFMTV credited it to Challenger, Gray & Christmas on September 4, 2026, a rival attribution.

The $1 billion attached to Grand Theft Auto VI’s launch day comes from no published study. MercoPress, which set out the arithmetic on August 27, 2026, says so directly: the estimate “has been circulating since last year in the sector’s digital ecosystem and does not come from a published study” (“no procede de un estudio publicado”), and “no consultancy has published the full methodology.”

The number is credited to José García Montalvo, professor of economics at Universitat Pompeu Fabra in Barcelona, quoted by Spanish site El Output. RockstarINTEL went further on August 29, 2026, writing that Montalvo “has conducted a study that points towards GTA VI’s release day alone could cause a one billion dollars due to absenteeism,” and putting the productivity drop at 2%. One version describes a figure in circulation, the other a piece of research.

Only two inputs are public: about 1.5 million people taking a working day off, multiplied by the average annual contribution of a US worker to gross domestic product, around $70,000. They do not produce $1 billion. Spread over 260 working days, they are worth roughly $404 million for a single day, and reaching the headline figure would take 3.7 million absentees. That is GTA6 LIFE’s arithmetic, run on September 4, 2026.

Ten days on from MercoPress, the number is still running as a headline. On September 6, 2026, International Business Times UK presented it as settled fact, “GTA 6 Release Day Set To Cost America $1 Billion,” while its own second paragraph calls the number “an academic projection rather than an official forecast.”

MercoPress supplies one benchmark that holds up: Challenger, Gray & Christmas puts lost productivity on the Monday after the Super Bowl at more than $4 billion, and publishes its method. Nothing comparable exists for Thursday, November 19, 2026, GTA 6’s release date. French broadcaster BFMTV nonetheless credited that same firm with the launch day billion on September 4, 2026, an attribution MercoPress never makes.

HR software company BambooHR has put a number on the requests. Its data, reported by Money.com and picked up by IGN on October 26, 2026, shows time-off requests for November 19 running 9% to 17% above those for a usual third Thursday of November. That is a rise in share, not a headcount: it neither backs nor refutes the 1.5 million absentees behind the billion.

Some absences are documented one by one. BFMTV, relaying a Wall Street Journal report, describes a memo dated July 28, 2026 to the US Army’s 9th Engineer Battalion in Georgia: four days of leave for soldiers who re-enlist before November 14, 2026, with 44 of the 130 eligible having already applied. International Business Times names two more: California parts retailer Burger Motorsports, which told customers shipping and support would slow from November 19, and software engineer Bud Burruss, who told the Wall Street Journal he has booked five working days off.

The same piece then sets that one-day billion against the “more than $1 billion” in operating cash flow Take-Two is targeting, and concludes the money changes hands. That target, announced on August 7, 2026, covers the entire fiscal year ending March 31, 2027. One day on one side, twelve months on the other. Neither Take-Two nor Rockstar Games has commented on the estimate, and no unit sales target sits alongside the $8.0 billion to $8.2 billion in net bookings expected that year.
