GTA 6 police explained: how the wanted system tracks you
Rockstar Games has published no fact sheet on how GTA 6 plays. Everything known about its police comes from the 26 minutes and 48 seconds of the Extended Look on August 27, 2026 and from an IGN interview with Rob Nelson the same day.
GTA6 LIFE

In Grand Theft Auto VI, a crime raises no stars at all until somebody sees it happen. A witness, an alarm or a security camera has to report it first, and that rule comes from Rob Nelson, co-director of Rockstar North, speaking to IGN on August 27, 2026. The meter itself climbs back to six stars. GTA V stopped at five. Under those stars sits a row of icons listing what the police know about the suspect, and it is that description, rather than the star count, that decides whether you get away.
Nelson walked through it controller in hand, in front of the press gathered at Rockstar North in July 2026. Here is his answer in full:
“The Wanted system in GTA 6 requires that someone witness the crime, or an alarm needs to be set off for it to be reported to the law. One star is not going to be too difficult to get away from. You can see with these little icons on-screen, the police know what we’re driving, so we should just jump out of the vehicle. They also know we’re a couple. You could split up, and that will also help lower the police’s perception of you.”
Six words in there carry the whole design: “the police know what we’re driving”. The cops are not chasing a player any more. They are chasing a description, and a description can be edited.
What the screen tells you during a chase
The stars stay top right, but they are no longer solid by default. KeenGamer noted on August 28, 2026 that they show as hollow outlines while the police still lack a full identification of the suspect. allthings.how described a colour code the same day: white at first, red during an active pursuit, black ringed with white once officers are heading for the crime scene.
The minimap stops giving patrols away. Individual police vehicle icons are gone, and VGC wrote that “a circle on the map will indicate the area in which the cops are tracking the pair, rather than seeing specific mini-map indicators for each police vehicle”. Finding a cruiser means spotting it, or using Focus, which highlights police and objects of interest according to the 69 gameplay details IGN published on August 27, 2026.
The four documented ways to break your description
None of these come from a manual. All four were either shown during the July 2026 session or stated by Nelson, and every one of them works on what the police believe rather than on the stars themselves.
| What is on file | The documented move | The known limit | Who reported it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Your face | Wear a mask during the crime, then take it off | No description reaches the police at all, even after passing a security camera | IGN and eXputer |
| Your appearance | Change into a completely different outfit | A new haircut alone clears the appearance icon and leaves the clothing one | IGN |
| Your vehicle | Bail out of the car the police have identified | A car registered to the player can be impounded once it is found | Rob Nelson to IGN, ComicBook |
| The pair of you | Split Jason and Lucia up | Nelson describes it as lowering police perception, not erasing it | Rob Nelson to IGN |

One more move happens before anything is stolen, and it edits nothing: it keeps a description from forming at all. VGC reported on August 27, 2026 that a player can swap mask, hat and clothes right before committing a crime, which lowers the wanted level incurred in the first place. The car trunk works as both wardrobe and armoury, according to Vice and KeenGamer on August 28, 2026, so the spare outfit and the guns travel with you. And getting clear before the first patrols arrive is usually enough on its own for the search to fade, per the preview compilation ComicBook published that day.

Which icons appear under the stars is where the coverage falls apart. allthings.how read them as camera, clothing, weapon and recognised accomplices. Three French outlets published three other lists on August 28, 2026: 01net saw face, clothes and vehicle, ActuGaming saw a silhouette, a clothes hanger and a CCTV camera, and Journal du Geek listed clothing, face accessories such as a hat or a bandana, being alone or in a pair, the car, and the weapon carried. Four readings of the same handful of frames. Rockstar Games has published none of them, so no list should be treated as closed.
What an arrest costs
Cash carried on the character is lost on death or arrest, while money in the bank is not, ComicBook reported. The hospital exit of previous GTA games is gone in the form players know, with a respawn nearby instead. A car sent to the impound is not lost either: IGN noted that a car fence can supply the access code for a police impound lot.
Carjacking is where the new caution shows. Pulling a driver out of a vehicle is still possible at any moment, but Nelson told the room what it now costs: “It brings a bit of risk now to jack someone out of the car, they’re going to call the cops, I’m going to have a bunch of trouble.” Some vehicles carry a GPS tracker that alerts the police, and speed is among the triggers reported by IGN and ComicBook. The full ladder of theft tools, from the Slim Jim to the key cloner, sits in our piece on how car theft changed.

What Rockstar has not said
As of August 28, 2026, Rockstar Games has published no official breakdown of any GTA 6 system, on its own site or anywhere else. Push Square pointed out that the studio has never said what happens at six stars, nor which forces turn up at that tier. The icons under the stars have had no official key published either, which is exactly why four outlets read them four ways.
One detail even splits the newsrooms that watched the video live. Game Informer wrote that four stars out of six were lit during the chase with Raul Bautista. Engadget wrote that it clearly saw six stars in the top right of the screen. Both cannot describe the same shot. A related claim is simply wrong and will keep being repeated: GTA BOOM wrote on August 27, 2026 that the system drops the star meter in favour of description tracking, when the description icons sit alongside the stars that Engadget and Game Informer both watched on screen.
Not one journalist touched a controller. The July 2026 session at Rockstar North was hands-off, played by Nelson while the room watched and held under embargo until August 27, 2026, so what is written here is announced behaviour and not the measured difficulty of a four-star chase. The wanted level is also a separate thing from the Criminal Profile, the long-term behaviour tracker we break down in its own article, and separate again from the Jason and Lucia bond. The return to six stars, and the silence around that sixth tier, is covered in our wanted system piece.
