GTA 6 wanted level goes back to six stars, and cops remember you

The maximum wanted level in GTA 6 goes back to six stars, one more than GTA V. Rockstar has explained how a chase starts and how the police build a description of you, and said nothing about the final tier.

The maximum wanted level in Grand Theft Auto VI goes back to six stars, one more than GTA V, and a crime no longer earns one on its own: a bystander has to see it, or an alarm or a camera has to report it. Rob Nelson, co-studio head at Rockstar North, said so to IGN on August 27, 2026.

His wording leaves little room:

“The Wanted system in GTA 6 requires that someone witness the crime, or an alarm needs to be set off for it to be reported to the law. One star is not going to be too difficult to get away from.”

Six is a return, not an invention. GTA III, Vice City and San Andreas all topped out at six before GTA V lowered the ceiling to five, as Engadget noted on August 27, 2026.

Until the police have a full identification, the stars stay as hollow outlines, KeenGamer wrote on August 28, 2026. Icons sit underneath to sum up what the officers know. Journal du Geek read them on August 28, 2026 as the clothes, the face accessories, the car, the weapon, and whether you are moving as a pair. Rockstar has never published that list, and three other readings of the same frames circulated the same day.

The same IGN interview supplies the counters. “You could split up, and that will also help lower the police’s perception of you,” Nelson said: separating Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos breaks the couple description. A new hairstyle clears the appearance icon but leaves the clothing one, per IGN’s 69 gameplay details, so it takes a whole outfit, kept in the trunk. A mask worn during the job and pulled off afterwards stops any description reaching the police, even past a surveillance camera. In GTA 6, stealing a car is no longer a single button either.

Escaping has changed too. Police vehicles no longer appear on the minimap: VGC described a circle marking the area patrols are searching. You find them by eye, as in the chases of the Extended Look.

The stars are not the only thing being logged. A separate Criminal Profile records how the player behaves over the long run, a behavior log rather than a morality meter.

One misreading is already spreading. GTA BOOM wrote on August 27, 2026 that the game drops the star counter in favor of tracking by description. The icons are added to the stars, not swapped for them.

What Rockstar has not said anywhere is what happens at six stars: which forces show up, and what separates the last tier from the fifth. Push Square flagged the gap on August 27, 2026, and the video does not settle it. Any account of how the police system works stops at the same point.

No journalist held a controller at the July 2026 sessions at Rockstar North, and the outlets that described it disagree on what they saw: Game Informer counted four stars out of six during the chase with Raul Bautista, Engadget saw six on screen.
