Before November 19, 2026, Rockstar describes Grand Theft Auto VI as a single-player experience. That label covers what ships at launch, and Take-Two's 2027 outlook counts single-player sales alone.
: Twitch chief executive Dan Clancy puts GTA 6 multiplayer in 2027 in a Bloomberg interview that frames the timing as his own expectation rather than a Rockstar announcement.
Rockstar Games has never written that GTA 6 will ship without an online mode. The June 24, 2026 pre-order release calls it 'a single-player experience', and the studio repeated that wording to IGN the same day. Describing what is in the box is not an exclusion: the phrase covers the $79.99 product shipping November 19, 2026, not what may follow.
The press release that opened Grand Theft Auto VI pre-orders on June 24, 2026 calls the game “a single-player experience set in the biggest, most immersive evolution of the series yet”. That is the only label Rockstar Games has put on the $79.99 product shipping November 19, 2026 for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Nowhere does the studio write that there will be no online mode. Describing what is in the box is not an exclusion.
The studio repeated the wording to IGN the same day, in a note sent straight to the newsroom, and Wesley Yin-Poole built his June 25, 2026 headline on it: “GTA 6 Is a ‘Single-Player Experience,’ Rockstar Confirms”. The US PlayStation Store product page, checked on August 28, 2026, says the same and no more: “1 player”, “Offline play enabled”, “Remote Play supported”. No online mode listed, no co-op.
GameSpot drew the line most clearly. On August 27, 2026, Eddie Makuch wrote that “the company has not confirmed outright that there won’t be an online mode at launch”. Plenty of outlets have published the opposite since June, crediting Rockstar with a sentence Rockstar never wrote.

What Take-Two’s $8 billion does not count
The “Take-Two’s future lineup announced to-date” table in the August 7, 2026 earnings release carries one Rockstar Games line: Grand Theft Auto VI, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, November 19, 2026. No online mode, no PC version, no GTA Online update. The Net Bookings outlook of $8.0 billion to $8.2 billion for fiscal 2027, reaffirmed that day, rests on a single-player game sold one copy at a time, and Rob Nelson said on August 27, 2026 that it carries no microtransactions.
For this publisher, that is an oddity. Recurrent consumer spending, the money players put into games they already own, made up 84% of Net Bookings in the quarter ended June 30, 2026, a record share, and it slipped 1% year on year.
| Reported | Quarter | Recurrent consumer spending |
|---|---|---|
| November 6, 2025 | Q2 FY2026 | 73% |
| February 3, 2026 | Q3 FY2026 | 76% |
| May 21, 2026 | Q4 FY2026 | 82% |
| August 7, 2026 | Q1 FY2027 | 84% |
Grand Theft Auto recurrent spending rose 3% over that same quarter, according to Variety. It comes from a 2013 game. Take-Two has never separated GTA Online from GTA V in its filings, and has never put a public figure on what the online mode brings in.
Jason Schreier (Bloomberg) says the silence is deliberate. In a video published August 10, 2026, after an interview with chief executive Strauss Zelnick, he said Take-Two “is only talking about GTA 6 in terms of the single-player portion”, and that on the new GTA Online “they have not talked at all, and they are not planning to talk anytime soon”. He gives no date, and he never says the online mode has been delayed.
Twitch has been talking to Rockstar
Dan Clancy, chief executive of Twitch, put GTA 6 multiplayer in 2027 in an interview Bloomberg published on September 17, 2026. “We spent a lot of time talking with Rockstar about their plans, and also helping them think about how they can engage our creators,” he said. “You are going to see this big bump with GTA 6, but then an even bigger one next year when they launch multiplayer.”
Bloomberg frames that timing as what Clancy anticipates, not as something Rockstar told him, and Zack Zwiezen drew the distinction for Kotaku the same day. Tyler Wilde put it another way for PC Gamer on September 17, 2026: Clancy “is not authorized to make such an announcement, but his comment doesn’t sound speculative.” Both newsrooms say they went to Rockstar Games for comment that day.

Fourteen days, back in 2013
GTA V shipped September 17, 2013; GTA Online followed on October 1, 2013. Two weeks. Red Dead Online arrived about a month after Red Dead Redemption 2. On August 10, 2026, USA Today For The Win still wrote that GTA Online landed “several weeks after” the single-player game. The slip stretches a wait Rockstar has never announced.
The 26 minutes and 48 seconds of “Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look”, streamed on Netflix on August 27, 2026 neither show nor mention multiplayer, and SVG counted “absolutely nothing that even teases multiplayer action”. The same day, Polygon put “What’s happening with Grand Theft Auto Online?” at the top of its four unanswered questions.
