GTA 6 is $80, not $70: why Rockstar raised the base price

Rockstar priced GTA 6's Standard edition at $79.99 on June 24, 2026, ten dollars above the $69.99 that held all generation. Take-Two blames inflation, though two publishers had backed off the same $80 line months earlier.
GTA 6's Standard edition costs $79.99, against the $69.99 most PS5 and Xbox Series games charge. Rockstar confirmed the price on June 24, 2026. Take-Two defends it with inflation: on August 7, 2026, chief executive Strauss Zelnick said the real cost of a AAA game is far lower than it was 20 years ago, and that pricing has not kept pace with inflation.
Grand Theft Auto VI’s Standard edition costs $79.99, ten dollars more than the $69.99 that became the norm on PS5 and Xbox Series. Take-Two Interactive and Rockstar set that price on June 24, 2026, alongside a $99.99 Ultimate edition, with pre-orders opening the next day. The question is those ten dollars: why this tier now, and not the $69.99 the generation had settled on.
Big-budget game prices have moved twice in twenty years. The $59.99 tier settled in during the mid-2000s on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, with markers like Call of Duty 2 shipping at $60 in 2005, and it held for about fifteen years. NBA 2K21, published by 2K, a Take-Two label, was the first to break it: $69.99 on PS5 and Xbox Series X, announced on July 2, 2020, while the PS4 and Xbox One versions of the same game stayed at $59.99.
Three tiers in twenty years, and the game that dated each one.
| Tier | Set in | Marker game |
|---|---|---|
| $59.99 | mid-2000s | Call of Duty 2, 2005 |
| $69.99 | July 2020 | NBA 2K21 |
| $79.99 | June 2025 | Mario Kart World |
Adjust for inflation and the order flips. Using the Bureau of Labor Statistics calculator, cited by Ars Technica, a game sold for $59.99 in November 2006 was worth $76.33 in 2020: in constant dollars, the big-budget games the industry calls AAA have never been cheaper. That is the case Take-Two makes for GTA 6’s $79.99.
The $80 line two publishers walked back
Three games tested the $80 mark in 2025, with three different outcomes. Mario Kart World, launched with the Nintendo Switch 2 on June 5, 2025, was the first past it, at $79.99, and $30 cheaper bought in the $499.99 console bundle. The Outer Worlds 2, pitched by Microsoft as the first $80 Xbox game, dropped back to $69.99 on July 23, 2025, with pre-orders already charged $80 refunded the $10 difference. Borderlands 4, published like GTA 6 by a Take-Two label, landed at $69.99 in the end, announced on June 16, 2025.
Gearbox boss Randy Pitchford had spent months softening the ground for $80, telling one worried fan, “If you’re a real fan, you’ll find a way to make it happen.” He also let slip that the fourth game carried “more than twice the development budget” of the third. GTA 6 becomes the second game to launch at $80 after Mario Kart World, and the first outside Nintendo to hold that price at release, where Microsoft had flinched.
Take-Two’s inflation defense

Strauss Zelnick, Take-Two’s chief executive, defended the price on August 7, 2026: “The truth is that the real cost of a AAA video game is a whole lot lower today than it was 20 years ago. Pricing has not kept pace with inflation.” He argued Rockstar could have asked for more, “Given the hype around this title, I think we could have made any number of other pricing choices,” and that the goal “is not to maximize price.” The price does not commit the rest of the group either: “It’s very much case by case,” he said, pointing to the $50 that 2K set for Mafia: The Old Country.
From $59.99 in 2013 to $79.99 in 2026
The sharpest comparison is the series itself. GTA V shipped on September 17, 2013 at $59.99 for the Standard edition. Thirteen years on, GTA 6’s base is $79.99: $20 more, roughly a third higher. For anyone weighing the two editions, the edition comparator puts Standard and Ultimate side by side. Analysts split on what the move means. Serkan Toto, of Kantan Games, thinks the price makes it easier for other publishers to charge more, “exactly because it is such a big release.” Joost van Dreunen, a professor at NYU’s Stern School of Business, reads it the other way: “GTA 6 doesn’t lift all prices but widens the gap between the haves and the have-nots,” and the players put off by $80 amount to “a rounding error against the anticipation.” An IGN poll on August 7, 2026 backed him up, with more than 70% of respondents ready to take the $100 Ultimate over the $80 Standard.
