GTA 6's Jason moves 'like a robot,' says ex-Rockstar animator

A former Rockstar Games animator watched the 26 minutes and 48 seconds of the Extended Look with a working eye. Mike York told TechRadar on September 4, 2026 what he reads in Jason Duval, and what disappointed him.

: Adds Mike York's verbatim on the kind of character he still hopes Jason turns into, from the second part of his TechRadar interview, and names the bar the elevator scene leads to.

Mike York, a former Rockstar Games animator, told TechRadar on September 4, 2026 that Jason Duval moves like "a robot, a Terminator" through the 26 minutes and 48 seconds of the GTA 6 Extended Look, and reads as deadpan and monotone. He also finds the facial animation behind the curve and the interface dated. York left Rockstar long before GTA 6 started, so this is a reading of footage, not inside knowledge.

Mike York, a former Rockstar Games animator, says Jason Duval reads as “a robot, a Terminator” in the Extended Look. He told TechRadar so on September 4, 2026, eight days after Rockstar put the 26 minutes and 48 seconds of gameplay online.

“Jason moves around very slow and methodical. That’s the first thing I noticed. He seemed like a robot, a Terminator, walking through every scene and mowing people down with no emotion.”

The comparison York reaches for is Niko Bellic from GTA IV, the kind of lead he hopes is still coming. For now he calls Jason “quite deadpan and monotone,” and says he wants back the wit that made GTA IV his favourite in the series.

A second part of the interview, published on September 11, 2026, spells out the character he is missing: “Rockstar usually gives us a bunch of neat characters who are funny and have their own flair.” He does not know whether Jason will be one of them, he says, but he hopes so.

Lucia Caminos, he thinks, is the counterweight. He points to the elevator ride up to Effluvia, the rooftop bar where the pair meet Brian Heder about 9 minutes 50 seconds in. Jason says “Sometimes I’m just more comfortable when I have to use a gun” and Lucia answers “Just be charming!”. “Lucia’s got this attitude where you can tell she’s trying to break him out of his shell,” York says. “She’s the one that probably goes into missions gung-ho, all guns blazing.”

He reads the same split in the music: Depeche Mode’s “People Are People” under Jason’s scenes, Cliff Richard’s “Devil Woman” under Lucia’s. Both tracks are in the 14 songs of the Extended Look.

An animator’s two reservations

On faces, York does not see MetaHuman, the Unreal Engine facial capture technology: “It doesn’t seem like they’re using MetaHuman capture technology. It looks like they’re still doing it the old-school way, like in GTA 5.” High-fidelity facial rigs add hundreds of bones to a head and slow everything down, he explains.

He also picks at the weapon wheel and the mini map, both “a bit outdated and weird” to him, and says the interface does not match the style of the game. Rockstar Games has published nothing on either point, and has never said whether the interface shown on August 27, 2026 is the one shipping on November 19, 2026.

His overall verdict runs the other way. He rates GTA 6’s level of detail above anything he knows except Cyberpunk 2077: “There are levels to this shit. Rockstar are the kings of that.”

None of this is inside knowledge. TechRadar writes that York joined Rockstar New England in Andover, Massachusetts in 2012 and left three years later, after work on GTA 5 and GTA Online; GamesRadar put his exit at 2017 back on January 29, 2025. No source settles the gap, and either date leaves him outside the studio well before GTA 6 went into production.
