GTA 6 without PS Plus or Game Pass: solo, offline play enabled

GTA 6 launches November 19, 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, sold as a single-player experience. Its PlayStation Store listing reads '1 player' and 'Offline play enabled,' while Sony ties PS Plus to online multiplayer.
The official GTA 6 listings do not make PS Plus or Game Pass a condition for playing. The PlayStation Store lists the game as 1 player with offline play enabled, and Sony requires the subscription for online multiplayer. The Microsoft Store listing warns that some features 'may require' an internet connection and a Rockstar Games account, without naming them. The box holds only a download code, so the game installs over the internet from November 12, 2026.
Grand Theft Auto VI launches November 19, 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, and its PlayStation Store page lists it as “1 player” with “Offline play enabled.” Sony’s PS Plus subscription is what unlocks online multiplayer. As of September 28, 2026, Rockstar Games has not said what the game will ask for the first time it boots.
| Console | Offline play | Subscription for online multiplayer | Cheapest plan |
|---|---|---|---|
| PS5, PS5 Pro | on the PS5 with Console Sharing and Offline Play turned on | PlayStation Plus | Essential, $10.99 a month, $79.99 a year |
| Xbox Series X, Series S | on your home Xbox | Xbox Game Pass | Essential, $9.99 a month |

Do you need PS Plus to play GTA 6?
Sony’s support page is plain about what the subscription covers: “In order to play most PS4 and PS5 games in online multiplayer, you need to have a PlayStation Plus subscription.” GTA 6 as sold falls outside that case. Take-Two’s pre-order release of June 24, 2026 calls it “a single-player experience,” and the PlayStation listing carries no online play label. The state of GTA 6’s online mode has its own article.
A solo player may still want PS Plus for one thing: cloud saves on PS5, with 100GB of storage, covered in our save guide.
What about Game Pass on Xbox?
The Microsoft Store listing declares five features, one of them “Single player.” All three console Game Pass plans, Essential at $9.99, Premium at $14.99 and Ultimate at $22.99 a month, include “Online console multiplayer.” Xbox cloud saves work without any subscription. Getting the game itself through Game Pass is a separate question, answered in is GTA 6 free.
Do you need an internet connection and a Rockstar account?
To install the game, yes, because the box holds a code rather than a disc. Rockstar’s store puts it this way: “Physical versions will only contain a download code inside the box to support pre-load on November 12.” The download opens November 12, 2026 for boxed and digital copies alike, and the boxed code has limits of its own.
To play, the Microsoft Store listing adds a caveat: “Certain game features, content, services, or functions may require internet connection, Rockstar Games account registration (minimum age varies), single-use serial code, additional fees, or unlocking with gameplay.” It does not say which features. What GTA 6 requires at first launch can be checked on November 19, 2026.
Can you play GTA 6 offline on PS5?
Yes, on one console. With Console Sharing and Offline Play, Sony says you can “play your games and media even when the console is offline.” The setting “is automatically allowed on the PS5 console you’ve used to sign in to PlayStation for the first time,” and it can be on for only one PS5 at a time. It sits under Settings, Users and Accounts, Other.
One catch: Sony notes that restoring a PS5 from a USB backup turns the feature off. Switch it back on before you pull the network cable.
And on Xbox Series X|S?
Microsoft says your home Xbox “lets you play your digital games offline.” An account gets one home Xbox at a time and can switch it up to five times in any one-year period. First-time console setup needs the internet: “Without an internet connection, you can’t finish setup.”
Losing the connection mid-session won’t stop the game, according to Microsoft’s cloud save FAQ. A session you quit while offline simply won’t upload its save to the cloud.
