The 26 minutes and 48 seconds shown on August 27, 2026 run at 1440p and 30 frames per second on a base PS5, Digital Foundry found. Rockstar's one published graphics mode grid dates from March 15, 2022, for GTA V.
: Digital Foundry reads 1440p upscaled to 4K again in the October 15 launch trailer, and no longer sees the Extended Look's animation judder.
The measured figure for GTA 6 is 30 frames per second at an internal resolution of roughly 1440p on PlayStation 5, from Digital Foundry's analysis of the Extended Look published on August 28, 2026, a resolution the same outlet read again in the launch trailer on October 16, 2026. The one graphics mode grid Rockstar Games has ever published for a Grand Theft Auto covers GTA V on March 15, 2022: Fidelity at 30fps, Performance and Performance RT at 60fps.
Digital Foundry put the PlayStation 5 capture of “Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look”, broadcast on August 27, 2026, at an internal rendering resolution of about 1440p with no dynamic scaling, lifted to 4K by what reads as “a relatively straightforward spatial upscale from 1440p to 4K”. Its output held a “relatively stable and well-paced 30FPS”, with only very occasional single frame drops. That is the sharpest number a buyer has 65 days out from the November 19, 2026 release, and it describes a base PS5 rather than a PS5 Pro.
Rockstar’s launch trailer of October 15, 2026, around 90 seconds of footage, told Digital Foundry the same story a day later: “Again, the resolution here looks to be 1440p upscaled to 4K (albeit with black bars).” What changed is the motion. The “animation pacing errors” seen in the Extended Look, a RAGE engine quirk going back to GTA 4 that makes characters and camera judder even at a stable frame rate, are gone: “that characteristic inconsistency isn’t present, including in slow pans.” Digital Foundry adds its own caveat, that Rockstar “could have shot the video in a way that doesn’t reveal the problem as overtly”, and would “probably lean towards QSSR not being used”, QSSR being the AI upscaler Sony announced for the base PS5 on October 1, 2026.
Rockstar Games is keeping the spec sheet in-house. As of September 15, 2026 its product page carries two platforms and a “Plays Best On PlayStation 5” badge; the PlayStation listing adds the “PS5 Pro Enhanced” label, Tempest 3D audio and adaptive triggers with “dynamic resistance throughout the game”; the Microsoft Store listing declares five capabilities, “Single player”, “Optimized for Xbox Series X|S”, “Xbox achievements”, “Xbox presence” and “Xbox cloud saves”. Where the 30fps figure came from, and how much weight it carries, is the subject of our piece on Rob Nelson’s reported comments.
The one mode grid Rockstar has published
Rockstar put this grid on its Newswire on March 15, 2022, for GTA V on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, and has repeated the exercise for no other game in the series.
| Mode | Target | PS5 and Xbox Series X | Xbox Series S |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fidelity | 30fps | native 4K with ray tracing | upscaled 4K |
| Performance | 60fps | upscaled 4K | 1080p |
| Performance RT | 60fps | upscaled 4K with ray tracing | unavailable |
It landed 8 years and 6 months after GTA V first shipped on PS3 and Xbox 360 on September 17, 2013, and it was the first 60fps console mode in the series. Red Dead Redemption 2, out on October 26, 2018, is still waiting for its official equivalent on PS5 and Xbox Series. The Xbox Series S row is worth its own look, since it drops to 1080p where the other two machines hold an upscaled 4K: what the Series S can run.

What the PS5 Pro actually changes
Digital Foundry set out on June 29, 2026 why the strongest console in the lineup does not automatically take the performance mode: the PS5 Pro “only offers a fractional CPU performance bump over base PS5”, with most of its advantage coming from GPU horsepower, improved RT acceleration and PSSR upscaling. Those levers leave the CPU burden where it was, which is why Digital Foundry expects “a 30fps or 40fps mode on PS5 Pro than a 60fps option”.
The frame budget does the rest of the arguing. At 30fps the engine gets 33.3 milliseconds per frame, and Digital Foundry says GTA 6 holds that cadence “with care” after an enormous balancing act between CPU and GPU workloads “to fully saturate the hardware”. Doubling to 60fps cuts the budget to 16.7 milliseconds. A 40fps middle ground would leave 25 milliseconds, but it needs a 120Hz display, since 40 does not divide into 60. Worth factoring in before you upgrade: is the PS5 Pro worth it for GTA 6.
The retailer listing doing the rounds since June
A pre-order description on Media Markt’s Polish storefront, spotted by a Reddit user and written up by GamingBible on June 24, 2026, says “GTA VI on next-generation consoles offers two graphics modes to choose from (Performance and Quality)”. Two caveats belong with any quote of it. It is a retailer’s copy, not a Rockstar statement. And it attaches no frame rate to either mode: the “60fps” in the headlines that followed came from the outlets, not from the listing.
Readers have been voting on the question meanwhile. Push Square’s poll of August 27, 2026, “Is 30fps in GTA 6 a deal breaker for you?”, stood at 3,475 votes when read on September 15, 2026: 31% will manage at 30fps if they have to, 26% would take a 40fps option, 25% cannot play below 60fps and 10% do not care about frame rates. It held 2,781 votes on August 28, with the same split to within a point. Three weeks of extra votes left the quarter who treat 60fps as a condition of purchase exactly where it was.

Digital Foundry published its Extended Look analysis on August 28, 2026, and the roundups kept only the compliments. The same text describes softness, visible geometric aliasing, shimmer on fine details and noisy ray-traced reflections.
