All summer, storefronts showed a provisional label for Grand Theft Auto VI. On October 1, 2026, 49 days out, the PlayStation Store and Xbox Store switched to the final ESRB Mature 17+ and PEGI 18, with seven ESRB descriptors.
: PEGI's detailed content summary, posted then pulled on October 2 according to IGN: decapitation, cocaine snorted at any time, strong sexual themes.
Since October 1, 2026, the PlayStation Store and Xbox Store show GTA 6's final rating: ESRB Mature 17+ in the United States and Mexico, with the same seven descriptors as GTA V, PEGI 18 in the UK and France, with Drugs and Sex, and R 18+ in Australia. On October 2, according to IGN, PEGI briefly posted a detailed summary citing decapitation, dismemberment and cocaine snorted at any time, then pulled the page.
On October 1, 2026, 49 days before launch, Grand Theft Auto VI started showing its final age rating on the PlayStation Store and the Xbox Store: ESRB Mature 17+ in the United States, PEGI 18 in France and the UK. The provisional codes GTA6 LIFE logged on those same pages on August 28 and September 30 are gone. IGN reported the change the same day.
The US PlayStation page lists seven content descriptors: Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, Mature Humor, Nudity, Strong Language, Strong Sexual Content, Use of Drugs and Alcohol. That is word for word the list on the ESRB’s Grand Theft Auto V listing. Red Dead Redemption 2 carries six, without Mature Humor. The US Xbox Store shows the same seven.
On the PEGI side, the UK and French PlayStation pages serve four descriptors: Drugs, Sexual Content, Nudity and Extreme Violence. The UK Xbox Store shows Drugs, Sex and Violence. PEGI’s March 15, 2022 sheet for GTA V carried neither the Sex nor the Drugs pictogram, even though its text described meth production. GTA 6 carries both.
| Country | Board | Label served on October 1 |
|---|---|---|
| United States, Mexico | ESRB | Mature 17+ |
| France, UK | PEGI | PEGI 18 |
| Australia | ACB | R 18+ |
| Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates | GCAM, NMC | 21 |
| South Korea | GRAC | GRAC 19+ |
| Japan | CERO | CERO Under Review |
| Brazil | ClassInd | ClassInd Rating Pending |
| Germany | USK | USK Rating Pending |
That check settles two claims Notebookcheck published on September 29, credited to GTAVice.net. The D rating it reported for Mexico does not exist: the Mexican page serves the same Mature 17+ as the US page. And the Australian X 18+ label appears nowhere. The Australian page, which still served “ACB CTC” on September 30, now shows R 18+, with Drug Use, High Impact Violence and Sex Scenes.
The ESRB defines the provisional label those pages carried all summer in its Ratings Guide:
Not yet assigned a final ESRB rating but anticipated to be rated Mature 17+. Appears only in advertising, marketing, and promotional materials related to a physical (e.g., boxed) video game that is expected to carry an ESRB rating, and should be replaced by a game’s rating once it has been assigned.
The public databases lag behind, and PEGI’s briefly ran ahead. On October 2, IGN reported that a PEGI 18 page for the game had gone up on the board’s website with a content summary, then vanished the same day behind “The requested page could not be found.” A search of PEGI’s database for “Grand Theft Auto VI” on October 2 returned nothing. IGN quoted the summary:
Violence is bloody with a high degree of realism, with certain weapons being able to cause greater damage such as detailed decapitation and dismemberment. […] Most notably, cocaine can be carried around by the player and snorted directly from their hand at any time.
The same text lists nudity, scenes of intercourse and “occasional scenes of sexual fetishes,” paid private dances in clubs during which the player can touch the dancers, domestic animals that can be harmed without the injury detail shown on humans, and discriminatory language on TV shows and radio channels. The ESRB’s summary for GTA V spoke only of “rare depictions of dismemberment.” For GTA 6, the ESRB has not published its own: on October 1 its site still returned only Vice City titles.
Both systems list one interactive element, In-Game Purchases, as GTA V’s final ESRB listing does. The boxed version reaches shelves on November 12, 2026, a week before the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S launch. For anyone buying this game for a teenager before November 19, what can actually be verified today is a short list.
