GTA 6 is rated PEGI 18 in Europe and ESRB Mature 17+ in the US. Both labels replaced the provisional marks on the PlayStation and Xbox stores on October 1, 2026, and the ESRB published its listing on October 6. It names seven descriptors, from Blood and Gore to Use of Drugs and Alcohol, plus In-Game Purchases; the French PlayStation Store lists drugs, sexual content, nudity and extreme violence. The Rockstar Store gates its page at 18.
Grand Theft Auto VI is rated PEGI 18 in Europe and ESRB Mature 17+ in the United States. Both final labels replaced the provisional marks on the PlayStation and Xbox stores on October 1, 2026, and the ESRB published listing 41627 on October 6, as our rating news details. Rockstar Games adds its own threshold: the Rockstar Store declares a minimum age of 18 behind its product page.
Until then, Take-Two Interactive’s pre-order announcement of June 24, 2026 read “not yet rated”, and on August 28, 2026 the latest GTA listing in the PEGI database was GTA V’s, dated March 15, 2022.
What each storefront shows
Checked on October 1, 2026, against the August 28 reading.
| Storefront | Label on October 1 | Descriptors | Label on August 28 |
|---|---|---|---|
| PlayStation Store US | “ESRB Mature 17+” | seven, plus In-Game Purchases | “ESRB Rating Pending Mature 17+” |
| PlayStation Store France | “PEGI 18” | Drogues, Sexual Content, Nudité, Violence extrême | “PEGI Provisional 18” |
| Xbox Store US | “MATURE 17+” | the same seven | “RATING PENDING LIKELY MATURE 17+” |
| Xbox Store UK | “PEGI 18” | Drugs, Sex, Violence | “PEGI 18 PROVISIONAL” |
| Rockstar Store | age gate, minimum age 18 | none | same |
The only official line Rockstar Games has published about the content sits in the footer of rockstargames.com/VI: “May contain content inappropriate for children. Visit esrb.org for rating information.”
What “Rating Pending” meant, and the deadline it set
The ESRB defines the provisional mark in its Ratings Guide, checked on August 28, 2026:
Not yet assigned a final ESRB rating but anticipated to be rated Mature 17+. Appears only in advertising, marketing, and promotional materials related to a physical (e.g., boxed) video game that is expected to carry an ESRB rating, and should be replaced by a game’s rating once it has been assigned.
That last clause set a date. The boxed copy reaches shelves on November 12, 2026, a week before release, and the final label came six weeks earlier.
American storefronts announce 17, European ones 18. The ESRB describes Mature 17+ as content “generally suitable for ages 17 and up” that “may contain intense violence, blood and gore, sexual content and/or strong language”. PEGI puts its 18 tier elsewhere:
The adult classification is applied when the level of violence reaches a stage where it becomes a depiction of gross violence, apparently motiveless killing, or violence towards defenceless characters.
Rockstar’s own store settles it: the age gate declares 18, on the international version and the French one alike.

Next to GTA V and Red Dead Redemption 2
| Game | ESRB rating | ESRB descriptors | PEGI pictograms |
|---|---|---|---|
| GTA V, 2022 release on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S | M for Mature 17+ | 7 | 4 |
| Red Dead Redemption 2 | M for Mature 17+ | 6 | not checked here |
| Grand Theft Auto VI | M for Mature 17+ | 7 | 4 on the PlayStation Store |
GTA 6 carries GTA V’s seven descriptors exactly: Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, Mature Humor, Nudity, Strong Language, Strong Sexual Content and Use of Drugs and Alcohol. Red Dead Redemption 2 carries six, minus Mature Humor.
A parent who reads pictograms sees less: GTA V’s PEGI entry describes methamphetamine production and sexual scenes in its written text, while its four pictograms say only Violence, Bad Language, Gambling and In-game purchases. GTA 6’s European labels add Drugs and Sexual Content.
Purchases are declared: the ESRB listing adds the In-Game Purchases element, as GTA V’s does, and the French PlayStation Store shows “Achats intra-jeu”. On a PS5 child account, the monthly spending limit is zero by default.

What was shown on August 27, 2026
Engadget described the 26 minutes and 48 seconds Rockstar released through Netflix shot by shot: an apartment turned into a crack lab and the police raid that follows, convenience store and jewelry store robberies, cocaine snorted in an office, a strip club, a chase with assault rifle fire, a hand to hand fight in which Lucia drives her heel into an attacker’s eye. The ESRB listing adds Nudity and Strong Sexual Content to that list.
IGN watched the game at Rockstar’s offices and published the same day. It describes a shot to an arm or a leg that puts an enemy out of the fight without killing them, and confrontations that end by pointing a gun at a character until they run. A “Criminal Profile”, which IGN compares to Red Dead Redemption 2’s honor system, is fed by gratuitous violence and by causing more chaos than a job asks for.
