GTA 6 on PS5 Pro: is the $899.99 console worth $300 more?

The PS5 Pro has cost $899.99 since April 2, 2026, three hundred dollars above a PS5 Digital Edition. That gap buys no extra frames in GTA 6: the part holding the game at 30fps is the one the Pro barely improves.
: The stock section adds the October 23 Best Buy restock, sold out the same night according to The Shortcut.
Not for the frame rate, no. The PS5 Pro has cost $899.99 since April 2, 2026, and none of that gap adds a frame to GTA 6 on November 19, 2026. Rob Nelson told Brazilian creator Davy Jones that console builds run at 30 frames per second, published by Flow Games on August 27, 2026, and Push Square notes the same day that this covers the Pro.
Not for the frame rate, no. The PS5 Pro has cost $899.99 since April 2, 2026, and none of it adds a frame to Grand Theft Auto VI on November 19, 2026. Rob Nelson, co-director of Rockstar North, told Brazilian creator Davy Jones that console builds run at 30 frames per second, remarks Flow Games published on August 27, 2026 and Kotaku carried. Push Square notes the same day that this covers the Pro. The number came from a guest, in Portuguese: Rockstar Games itself has published nothing on the frame rate.
What holds the game back is the processor, the chip that keeps the world moving, not the graphics card that draws the picture, Digital Foundry wrote on June 29, 2026.
“The console only offers a fractional CPU performance bump over base PS5, with most of its advantage deriving from better GPU horsepower, improved RT acceleration and support for PSSR upscaling. None of these features really shift the needle in terms of alleviating the CPU burden.”
RT acceleration speeds up ray tracing, where reflections and shadows are traced along light paths, and PSSR is Sony’s upscaler, rebuilding a 4K image from a smaller render. Both live on the graphics card.
What the CPU is doing for 33.3 milliseconds
At 30 frames per second, the processor gets 33.3 milliseconds per frame to move pedestrians, traffic, police, vehicle physics and scripts along.
| Target | Frame budget | What it would take |
|---|---|---|
| 30fps | 33.3 ms | measured by Digital Foundry on August 28, 2026 |
| 40fps | 25 ms | a 120 Hz display, and an unannounced mode |
| 60fps | 16.7 ms | CPU time nobody can find |
Digital Foundry’s verdict on August 28, 2026: a 60fps version is “extremely unlikely on console hardware: there’s no way to regain enough GPU and particularly CPU time to make a 16.7ms update rate work without compromising the world.” It applies to the Pro as much as to the $599.99 machine. The same analysis blamed an animation judder, a stutter visible even at a steady frame rate, on Rockstar’s RAGE engine rather than the chip. Digital Foundry saw none in the launch trailer, though its shots may have been chosen to hide it.

The “PS5 Pro Enhanced” badge nobody has filled in
Sony’s product page stamps Grand Theft Auto VI as “PS5 Pro Enhanced”, with no resolution and no graphics modes behind it. Rockstar Games has said the game will get PS5 Pro enhancements without describing them, Polygon reported on September 1, 2026. When Sony introduced the badge on September 10, 2024, it described games patched “to take advantage of PS5 Pro’s features”.
No footage of the game on a PS5 Pro has been shown. Rockstar’s launch trailer of October 15, 2026 was “captured entirely in-game from a PlayStation 5”, a standard PS5 per GameSpot, like the Extended Look of August 27. In both, Digital Foundry reads 1440p upscaled to 4K (on August 28 via Pure Xbox, “a relatively straightforward spatial upscale”, and again on October 16), the internal image stretched, not rebuilt. That is the exact job PSSR does on the PS5 Pro, and the only place the $300 could show up on screen: sharpness, not frame rate. Since October 1, 2026, the base PS5 has a lighter version, QSSR, which Sony engineer Daniel Craig calls “a new performance tier of AI upscaling”, adding that “PSSR remains the gold standard on PS5 Pro.” Neither Sony nor Rockstar has written that GTA VI uses either, and Digital Foundry would “probably lean towards QSSR not being used” in the trailer: in its Wolverine tests, that upscale costs “around 4ms” of a 33 ms frame.

What the $300 gap covers
| Console | US price | Storage on the box | Storage the console shows | Disc drive |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| PS5 Digital Edition | $599.99 | 1 TB | 848 GB | no |
| PS5 with disc drive | $649.99 | 1 TB | 848 GB | yes |
| PS5 Pro | $899.99 | 2 TB | 1.89 TB | no, sold separately |
Sony’s prices since March 27, 2026, when its PlayStation Blog added $100. The drive is beside the point: Rockstar’s support page of June 24, 2026 states that “A disc will not be included in the box.”
Storage is the only measurable thing inside the $300: the 1.89 TB in the table comes from TechRadar, carried by Push Square on November 6, 2024, the 848 GB from Digital Trends on November 9, 2023, a gap of roughly 1,040 GB that matters when pre-load opens on November 12, 2026.
List price has often been out of reach since the Extended Look. On October 7, Tom’s Guide found the Pro sold out at six US retailers including PlayStation Direct. GameStop sold used ones at $1,399.99 on October 7, VGC reported: an internal email posted on Reddit calls this “intentional.” Circana counted US PS5 sales up 22% in units and 43% in dollars in September, GameSpot reported on October 22. A Best Buy restock sold out on October 23, Matt Swider of The Shortcut says; Walmart has had none “since early September.” Sony has warned distributors that supply will stay tight until at least early 2027, per PlayFront, picked up by Jeuxvideo.com on September 26, 2026.
What would change the answer
Two unannounced things could. The first is a 40fps mode, which Digital Foundry called far likelier on PS5 Pro than 60fps on June 29, 2026. It needs a 120 Hz panel, since 40 does not divide into a 60 Hz refresh (see our TV guide).
The second is a patch: Nelson said he would have to consult the technical team before saying whether a 60fps option arrives at launch or later. Grand Theft Auto V shipped on September 17, 2013, and no GTA ran at 60fps on a console until its PS5 release of March 15, 2022.
