GTA 6 preload starts November 12: what to do first

Preload for GTA 6 opens on November 12, 2026 at midnight local time, seven days before release, for digital buyers and code-in-box buyers alike. Rockstar has published no download size, which leaves one job: clearing room.

Preload for Grand Theft Auto VI opens on November 12, 2026 at midnight local time, seven days before the November 19 release, and it covers boxed copies as well as digital ones. Rockstar Games’ support page, updated June 24, 2026, treats the two cases identically. Take-Two gave the reason in a single clause on the same day: the extra week exists “to ensure they are able to play at launch on November 19, 2026”.

The box holds no disc. The Rockstar Store says so in plain terms:

Physical versions will only contain a download code inside the box to support pre-load on November 12. A disc will not be included in the box.

That one line explains why boxes reach shelves a week early. They exist to put the code in buyers’ hands in time, and the consequence reaches everyone: disc drive or not, every player downloads the whole game.

Which leaves the question nobody can answer today. How much room to clear. Rockstar has published no install size, not on rockstargames.com/VI, not on the June 24, 2026 support page, and not on the Microsoft Store listing, which carried no gigabyte figure when checked on August 28, 2026. The ranges doing the rounds since the summer come from estimate sites, and not one of them points to an official page.

Who preloads, and what has to be in your hands

What you bought What happens on November 12, 2026
Digital pre-order, Standard or Ultimate The download opens at midnight local time
Box from Amazon, Walmart or Best Buy Delivery announced from November 12
Box from the Rockstar Store Estimated ship date of November 12, 2026
Box from GameStop Ships November 19, arriving on release day or shortly after

The bottom row is the only discord in the calendar. GamesRadar found on June 29, 2026 that GameStop was still shipping on the 19th while Amazon, Walmart and Best Buy all pointed at the 12th. Every one of them, Target included, prices the code-in-box edition at $79.99, IGN reported on June 25, 2026. Anyone who cares about preloading should trust the ship date shown on their own order rather than the one in the press release.

The Ultimate Edition, at $99.99, is digital only. There is no box to wait for, and its download opens on November 12 exactly like the Standard. A buyer who picked up the boxed Standard can pay for the upgrade at any point once the code has been redeemed, a detail Rockstar’s support page has carried since June 24, 2026.

The three dates that are left

Date What happens
November 12, 2026, midnight local time Preload opens, boxes with codes reach shelves and start shipping
November 19, 2026 Release on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Rockstar has never published an unlock time
November 20, 2026 Eligibility for the Vintage Vice City Pack ends: the game must be bought before this date

The Vintage Vice City Pack is not a pre-order exclusive, whatever you may have read. Take-Two’s June 24, 2026 announcement grants it on any purchase made before November 20, 2026, in any edition, from any retailer. Inside it: a 1955 Vapid Stanier with its garage, outfits and hairstyles, and a weapon finish.

Clearing space without knowing how much

The useful move before November 12 costs nothing: uninstall. A launch PS5 carries 825 GB of raw storage, of which roughly 667 GB is actually usable according to Frandroid’s guide of August 26, 2026, while the PS5 Slim moved to 1 TB and the PS5 Pro to 2 TB. The Xbox Series S at 512 GB is the tightest of the four machines involved, and the one where the arithmetic will bite. We run those numbers in how much storage you need, and weigh the machines against each other in PS5 or Xbox Series X.

Buying storage is the expensive answer this year

If deleting is not enough, the rules split by console, and one of them catches people out every generation. On PS5, a USB external SSD cannot run a PS5 game at all: it stores, it does not play. Only an internal M.2 NVMe PCIe Gen4x4 drive does the job, from 250 GB to 8 TB, with a sequential read speed of at least 5,500 MB/s recommended by Sony, a heatsink required, and a total thickness of no more than 11.25 mm.

Xbox Series X|S has exactly one option, the proprietary expansion card, and three companies now make one: Seagate, WD_Black and SanDisk.

The timing is unkind. SanDisk’s officially licensed PS5 range, the Optimus GX PRO 850P, arrived in June 2026 at $379.99 for 1 TB and $2,959.99 for 8 TB, prices reported by The Verge and relayed on June 22, 2026. Digital Foundry noted that a comparable WD_Black SN850X 8 TB sold for $600 a year earlier, and Notebookcheck found that same drive at $1,299.99 on Amazon in June 2026. Microsoft, announcing its own console price rises on June 25, 2026, put the market in one sentence:

Console storage and memory prices have increased by more than 2.5x and we expect another doubling by the fall of 2027.

Those rises landed on August 1, 2026: the Xbox Series S 512 GB went to $499.99 and the Xbox Series X with a disc drive to $799.99, as Pure Xbox listed on August 3, 2026. Deleting a game still costs nothing.

Preload shuts the refund window

On the PlayStation Store, a pre-order paid for more than 14 days before release can be cancelled and refunded up to the release date, on one condition written into Sony’s cancellation policy: the main content must not have started downloading. Preload is a download. November 12 is the real deadline, then, not November 19.

The detail that costs money is a console setting. With automatic downloads switched on, the console starts the preload by itself the minute it opens, and the refund right disappears without the buyer lifting a finger. The full procedure, and what becomes of bonus content already redeemed, sit in cancelling a pre-order and getting refunded.

What Rockstar still has not said

No unlock time has been published for November 19. The only official clock in the whole calendar is the preload, midnight local time on November 12. Regional unlock grids have circulated since May 2026 without a single Newswire citation between them, and they contradict each other, which we took apart in the release date and unlock time.

Nothing has been said about the storage medium either: no internal SSD requirement, no permission or ban on playing from an external drive. Two pages would carry an install size the day one exists, Rockstar’s support article of June 24, 2026 and the PlayStation Store listing. As of August 28, 2026, neither of them does.
